Dallas Bariatric Surgery Center offers comprehensive educational programming by highly trained and very experienced healthcare professionals to guide you through every step of the bariatric surgery process. From insurance approvals and authorization, to pre-surgery education, medical clearance, and preparation specific to your chosen procedure, acute care management during your gastric bypass or Lap-Band® operation, and the most detailed, individualized post-operative care available in North Texas, the Dallas team will walk step-for-step with you through your life-changing journey.

The first step on the road to better health begins at one of our information seminars to learn more about gastric bypass or Lap-Band® surgery. There are a variety of options available to you at a number of locations, see the specific page on this site dedicated to our seminar schedule for details. You can find something that will suit your needs, whether you are just looking for some detailed information or if you would like to have a consultation directly with one of our surgeons.

The seminar leads to the consultation with our bariatric surgeons, the all-important relationship that will need to be established so that we can begin the work of preparing your argument of medical necessity for surgery. At this visit, you and your surgeon will determine which surgery best fits your needs. The surgeon will review your health history with you to determine what pre-diagnostic tests need to be done which are specific to your health issues. After your doctor visit, we will begin preparations for surgery depending on your specific insurance policy’s requirements. Some insurance plans have no pre-set requirements while others may have multiple requirements that must be met. We will guide you step by step to gather the information that is required whether it be medical records, cardiac clearance, pulmonology clearance, specific lab tests, internal medicine clearance, or diet counseling.

Many insurance companies are requiring 3 to 12 consecutive months of medically supervised weight loss attempts within the last two years. If you do not have this documentation, we can help you to accomplish this task. Our program will walk you through this process step by step. Ideally, if you can do this with our bariatric physician and our dietitian, you can use this time for some very important training on post-surgery living. Also during this time, our patient care coordinators can help you schedule for the diagnostic testing that the surgeon ordered and we will gather all the results for your surgeon to review.

Once we have gathered all of the required information for the insurance company, we will submit a letter requesting surgical approval. The approval process varies with each insurance company, but we will keep in close contact with them until we receive a decision.

After the approval letter has been received you will be scheduled for a pre-operative appointment with the surgeon. You will go through a pre-operative education session with the pre-op nurse where you will be given a handbook specific to your operation, whether gastric bypass or Lap-Band®.

After surgery we have a structured after care program with regularly scheduled post-op visits with our program nurse and dietitian, medical check-ups with our bariatric physician, nutrition workshops, and support groups. It is very important to see the physician at regular intervals after surgery, and our staff will aid you by reminding you of these appointments and scheduling them for you. Our staff is always happy to answer any questions and help you in any way possible. The dietitian will also be available to you for any nutritional questions before or after your surgery. Our program is committed to you and we are going to be with you for the long run. We know that this can be very difficult at times and we will be there to support you. We will be your biggest advocates and we want to see you succeed and celebrate your victories with you, as well as help carry you through any setbacks you may encounter.
