Exercise Routines after Weight Loss Surgery
Exercise is a must in helping bariatric surgery patients to achieve the long-term benefits of losing weight, live a healthy lifestyle and maintain their desired weight. The reality is, sticking to your workout plans can be easier said than done.
Weight loss surgery is a powerful weight loss option, but it’s not a miracle cure. To experience the best life after weight loss surgery, you will need to commit to a healthy diet and consistent exercise regime so you can maximize your weight loss and feel better than ever.
If you are considering weight loss surgery or recovering from surgery, follow these exercise recommendations:
- Avoid abdominal exercises for the first three months to allow the stomach to heal.
- During the first six months after surgery, you can start with low-impact exercises such as shoulder rolls, leg lifts, arm rotations and walking.
- Start slow and gradually progress by opting for strength training exercises, which help burn calories, build muscle, improve body endurance and balance.
- Cycling and water aerobics can also be beneficial.
- After six to 12 months of post-surgery, the primary focus should be on strengthening the stomach muscles.
- Aerobics, dancing and yoga can help strengthen the stomach muscles. These activities, however, should be performed under the supervision of an instructor to avoid potential risks.
- A year after doing rigorous exercises, most people either reduce their physical activities or stop doing them altogether. This may lead to weight regain. It is important to stick to basic exercise routines such as cycling, swimming, hiking and weight and interval training in order to help maintain your body weight.
