Pre and Post-Op Support Program for Weight Loss

Pre and Post-Op Support Program

The decision to undergo bariatric surgery for weight loss requires a lot of thought and consideration. The good news is that our specialists at Nova Bariatrics & General Surgery can help you through every step of this journey, ensuring that you achieve your desired goals. Dr. Alibhai provides a comprehensive pre and post-op program for weight loss to enhance the success of surgery, maintain your ideal weight, and improve your overall health.

Pre-operation Program for Weight Loss

Nearly 3 months before the surgery, you will begin modifying your diet as per our dietician’s instructions. We will personalize your diet plan based on your current weight, age, gender, and other health factors. Generally, it is recommended to shed 5 to 10 pounds before the surgery.

The first step of your diet plan includes the intake of protein and non-starchy vegetables. We will specify the portion of each nutrient, ensuring that you receive a balanced diet while shedding excess fats. Lean protein sources include chicken, fish, turkey, lean red meat, etc.

Some foods you should avoid during this period include:

  • High-fat meats (sausage, bacon, etc.)
  • Starchy vegetables (peas, corn, potatoes, etc.)
  • Fast foods
  • Fried foods
  • Sugary beverages

A week or two before the surgery, we recommend switching to a low-fat, low-sugar, full-liquid diet. It helps reduce the size of the liver and assists in weight loss. Your liquid diet may include:

  • Water
  • Sugar-free, non-carbonated drinks
  • Low-sodium broth
  • Sugar-free popsicles
  • Protein drinks
  • Caffeine-free coffee and tea

Post-operation Program for Weight Loss

For each phase of the postoperative phase, we will suggest a diet plan to slowly introduce foods to your stomach. It helps avoid complications and achieve your ideal weight.

Full Liquid Diet
The first one to two weeks after surgery, you will have to follow the same liquid diet as before surgery.

Blended or Pureed Diet
For the next one to two weeks, you can consume blended or pureed foods that are rich in protein and low in fat. Some examples include tuna, scrambled eggs, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.

Soft Diet
Once your stomach begins to adjust, you can gradually introduce foods to your diet. This phase lasts for about 3 months. You can continue with the same foods as mentioned above. Our dietician will adjust your diet plan so that you can digest well and avoid complications. Some additional foods include:

  • Refried beans
  • Soft, cooked vegetables
  • Low-fat cheese
  • Low-fat deli meats
  • Natural applesauce

General Diet
About 3 to 4 months after surgery, you are ready to follow a balanced diet plan that includes all essential nutrients. Your plan will focus on protein intake that helps with post-operative healing and makes you feel satiated for longer. We will also recommend exercises and physical activities to help you maintain your health and fitness.
